Life of a former witch

I've outgrown my wicked witch of the west ways. Reflections of life afterwards, living in the desert with two cats, friends, family, and my hot and cold love life.

Score one for the women

Poker is generally seen as a men's game. Sure in the old west towns, a woman who could play poker was there primarily to bring men to the gambling hall. So a woman poker player was not really taken seriously, but more as an attraction.

I remember watching the "History of Poker" on the History Channel sometime ago. Part of it was filmed during the World Series of Poker (WSOP), and some of the poker legends were saying it's only a matter of time before a woman wins the WSOP. Okay, I'm talking about the Super Bowl of WSOP: $10,000 buy in, no rebuys, no-limit Texas Hold'Em. The series does have a ladies Texas Hold'Em event; actress Jennifer Tilley won it this year. While I appreciate his vote of confidence, I was very disappointed that of the 180+ players left today, only 6 were women. And I would see a women's name on the next list of busted out players.

So this is probably more for the ratings, but I was pleased to see this on cardplayer's WSOP updates:

Hang in there Tiffany...

Very surprised!

After the disappointment with the corn-based gluten-free "Hamburger Helper", I tried the rice-based Beef Stroganoff. At first, I wasn't holding out much hope the way the sauce was starting out.

It simmered quite well. The sauce was nice and thick. The noodles were accidentally overcooked by a few minutes, but it didn't seem to matter. I guess it remains to be seen if the noodles will reheat in good shape or not.

So, I'm willing to say that Mrs. Leeper's Beef Stroganoff is worth trying. Even if you don't have celiac! I found this at Wild Oats

break out the barf bags

Oh how the might have fallen. And it happened so suddenly that it makes me a bit queasy:

"Mr. Right?" says:
ok sweetness I need to start the day

Jenn says:
yeah, the formatting finally finished so I better get started on rebuilding

Jenn says:
hope you have a great day

"Mr. Right?" says:
   good luck baby

*happy sigh*

The good and the bad of Macs

What has been a nice feature about Macintosh models is that with some minor upgrades (bigger hard drive, more memory), they can last a long time without seeming like a dinosaur. My Mom this year replaced her five year old PC which desperately needed it. In our lab, I'm hoping that a rezeroing of the hard drive and some new partitions will extend the life of a six year old G3 (the first blue tower model available).

The bad news is that some of the more convient features are only for the newer machines. For example, even though our blue tower HAS firewire built-in, it is unable to boot in what is called "Firewire Target Disk Mode". This feature is coming in handy for people who want to upgrade to Mac OS 10.4 and do not have a DVD drive built-in.

I know that in the computer world, machines have a finite lifespan. And I know that with each new writing of the software to integrate new hardware, it gets more and more difficult to support older hardware without major system problems. But give a little credit where credit's due - please help extend the life of perfectly good machines!!!

*sigh* So I'm going to have to transfer back 13GB of data the hard way. At least the rezeroing and repartitioning helped (so far). I was able to get OS 9.2.2 on it, which is an improvement from last week.
