Life of a former witch

I've outgrown my wicked witch of the west ways. Reflections of life afterwards, living in the desert with two cats, friends, family, and my hot and cold love life.

Poker musings

I used to play poker a few years ago. Being the starving scientists, I was fronted a lot. Which was fine with me - if I won, they got the buy-in plus half the winnings; if not - well that's the risk in fronting. While the competitive side in me wanted to win, I always enjoyed playing because of the setting.

The proliferation of online poker and computer poker games in nowhere NEAR the same thing. There's a lot to be said to stare up your opponent to try and get a read out of him/her. From this point on, I'll refer to opponents as he since there was rarely another woman at the table with me.

While I miss playing live games, I'm sure my bankroll and lungs appreciate it. Also, reality says that I don't have the time anymore. Plus if I was going, it'd have to be bring your own food - from what I remember of their cafeteria food, I don't think there's anything I can have with my celiac. If I ever go back to Vegas, sure I'll play in some live games, but really don't care to travel to the local poker rooms anymore (even though I should feel fortunate that I have access to live games).

I just want to throw in my two cents about the lack of women playing poker. I read an article about the lack of women poker players in the big (no-limit) games and tournaments (I'll post it if I can find it again). I give a lot of credit to the women that do play no-limit; I don't think I could. But even at a table stakes game, I'll admit that I used my "handicap" to try and bluff my way out of a weak hand; only to later fool him into thinking I had a weaker hand when I didn't.

Why are there not as many professional women poker players - I don't know the true answer. But reading this from a poker blogger, I think I know part of the reason:

On a good note, I won back all the money I lost last week when I hit a jackpot at Mandalay Bay. I had pocket Jacks, flopped a set, and turned quads... in a kill pot too. The jackpot was $190 and the post was a lot more. Nothing could have been cooler than betting out with quads on the turn and getting raised while seeing another player in front of me smooth call. I tipped the dealer $50 too. In the last 8 days, I've collected over $300 in jackpots for hitting quads. That barely puts a dent into my lap dance tab at Crazy Horse Too.

I think the "poker lifestyle" doesn't sit well with many women. I tend to live simply, and could not comprehend such a lifestyle where there's a bet on everything, expensive toys, etc. And despite all the equal opportunity advancements, to quote my boss best "the best deals are done in the men's room".
