Investigators said a Phoenix man is lucky to be alive after he rolled his car on the Loop 101 after a night of drinking.
Brandon T. Hassell, 23, was ejected from his Infiniti sedan on the eastbound freeway near Tatum Boulevard, nearly losing an arm in the accident around 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
He is suspected of driving under the influence. Charges are pending, police said.
Despite his injuries - and the fact that he was lying wounded for about four hours on the side of the Loop 101 in the middle of the night - Hassell was conscious enough to tell DPS officers that someone else was driving the Infiniti, which is registered to his girlfriend's mother, police said.
Officers searched the area of the crash, but did not find any evidence of another suspect fleeing the scene.
"Our conclusion is his story is fictitious," DPS spokesman Harold Sanders said.
Hassell, who was driving on a license suspended from a previous DUI charge, lay in the dirt on the side of the freeway for hours until a passing driver reported the single-car wreck to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Officers responded at 5:30 a.m. Hassell was taken to John C. Lincoln Hospital-North Mountain in serious condition.
One of Hassell's arms was "nearly severed" in the accident, Sanders said, though the suspect's injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.
"We really believe he's going to live," Sanders said.
Hassell, who admitted to officers that he was drinking at a nearby bar before getting on the freeway, could face charges of aggravated DUI.
Additional charges could be pending, police said.
Somehow I doubt this accident will be enough to change his ways. And no matter how much my kid loves someone - anyone having a prior DUI will NEVER borrow my car until they are able to acquire a driver's license. I wonder if you can charge the parents with negligence for loaning the idiot the car in the first place.
